NEA Chair Michael Hammond
On January 29, 2002, the National Endowment for the Arts released news of the unexpected passing of Michael Hammond, the NEA chairman, who took office just one week prior on January 22. He was 69.
"Michael Hammond was an accomplished conductor, composer and advocate of the arts," said President Bush in a White House statement. "His commitment to excellence and his extraordinary talents will be greatly missed."
