ShapeCam is a new, portable 3D object capture system from Eyetronics. The system consists of a digital camera and a flash device mounted on a lightweight frame. ShapeCam's portability allows users to move freely around an object, capturing its 3D geometry and textures by taking pictures. The system works with Eyetronics' ShapeSnatcher software, which processes the ShapeCam pictures and assembles them into 3D digital models. ShapeCam can capture models of objects ranging in size from coins to human bodies.
To operate ShapeCam, a user aims the camera at an object (laser points help indicate the proper distance). At the same time the picture is taken, the flash projects a grid onto the object, which provides the information the software needs in order to create a 3D image later on. Users take multiple pictures at various angles in order to create a complete 3D object--the more numerous the shots, the greater the accuracy of the resulting model.
