On Robert Dickerson's oil painting, 
Lost Child 
 
   What to do with his free hand? 
   One hand cups her hip, holding 
   his arm like a rail at her back 
   to steady her on his left knee. 
 
   But his free hand, draped on 
   his uncommitted knee and almost 
   touching the hem of her frock 
   --his free hand is not free. 
 
   If she were his own, he would 
   run that hand over her shin, 
   feel the bird-like bone, knead
