IN THE BAD OLD DAYS of the Cold War and US Senator Joe McCarthy there arose a phenomenon which came to be known as anti-anticommunism. The unsavoury nature of communism was almost matched, and in domestic terms (in the USA, Australia and most other democracies) often more than matched, by the fanaticism and irrationality of the anticommunists. Many decent people while wanting no truck with communism, which they generally regarded with hostility and contempt, could not bear to be associated with the most vociferous of the anticommunists.
