Based on Suzuki's Vitara, the XL-7 is the only small SUV with seven seats. But it has a stiff ride and handles clumsily, though securely. For about the same price, a Honda Odyssey minivan seats seven more comfortably and is much nicer to drive.
THE DRIVING EXPERIENCE
The XL-7 rides better than its smaller cousin, the Vitara, but still feels stiff and rubbery. A full load has little effect. The cabin stays relatively quiet.
A large turning circle makes parking a chore. Handling is secure and predictable but not agile. Even mild curves require extra steering. In our avoidance maneuvers it proved stable and forgiving.
The 183-hp, 2.7-liter V6 provides only adequate acceleration. Expect 17 mpg in mixed driving on regular fuel. The four-speed automatic transmission shifts responsively. A five-speed manual is standard.
The 4WD system, with low range, is a basic part-time setup that can't be used on dry pavement in 4WD mode. It showed good traction in our off-road and rock-hill courses, but we rated off-road performance only average since the vehicle often bottomed out. Braking performance was very good overall.
