Three historic houses that were moved to the Shelburne Museum in Shelburne, Vermont, half a century ago by Electra Havemeyer Webb (Fig. 1), who founded the museum in 1947, have been extensively reinterpreted and were reopened to the public in May 2001. The work was prompted by a major grant from National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). (1)
Dutton House was the first domestic building Webb moved to the museum grounds in 1950. Begun in 1782 in Cavendish, Vermont, the house was moved more than a hundred miles to the museum. Stencil House, an 1804 farmhouse, came to Webb's attention in 1952 for its stenciled walls, and was moved from Sherburne, New York, in 1953. ...
