Ben Wattenberg misstates several statistics and confuses several arguments that Pat Buchanan makes ("Immigration: a Cause of the Clash of Civilizations ... Or a Solution To It?" March 2002). Among other things, he pooh-poohs Buchanan by noting that the same arguments were made in the early twentieth century and that nothing bad happened.
He fails to note that the reason nothing bad happened was because the nation took the naysayers' advice and, after the huge surge around the turn of the century, stopped immigration for some 45 years.
