The New Intifada is a collection of articles, written mainly by journalists and activists, blaming Israel and the United States for every possible problem in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Edited by Roane Carey, copy chief at The Nation, with an introduction by left-wing icon Noam Chomsky, The New Intifada addresses the current outbreak of violence, which began in September 2000.
The essayists blame Israel and the United States for the shattered Oslo peace accords. Edward Said critiques "apartheid" which he claims is what Israel enforces in the Palestinian territories. Ali Abunimah and Hussein Ibish condemn the alleged pro-Israel bias of U.S. media. Other chapters denounce the alleged racism inherent in the Israeli regime.
The collection highlights the injustice and pain the Palestinian people have suffered. This suffering must be recognized. But the torment of the Palestinians is not necessarily the fault of Israelis.
Israel has made repeated efforts to improve the autonomy and prosperity of Palestinians, but the likes of Yasser Arafat, leader of the Palestinian Authority, have consistently stifled those efforts. Arafat, like other Arab leaders, has detected a priceless advantage in the shedding of Palestinian blood: Such suffering can be exploited as propaganda to justify war against Israel. The "Palestinian problem" has always been far more useful to Arafat than its potential solution will ever be. That explains why the Palestinian leader has consistently provided sanctuary and support to terrorists--and given his personal endorsement to suicide bombings.
While the documentation in The New Intifada emphasizes the violence inflicted by Israel on the Palestinians, it mysteriously fails to mention that this violence is an action of self-defense by Israel against an enemy seeking its annihilation. The writers portray Israeli measures for self-preservation as acts perpetrated for malicious and sinister reasons. Palestinian terrorism is seen solely as the product of a powerless ...
