The general perception is the top of the draft is the source from which Super Bowls flow. The hidden truth is that picking in the top 10 can leave teams with more problems than Pro Bowl players.
Just take it from Mike Brown, who this April will have his ninth pick in the top 10--the Bengals pick 10th--since becoming team president of the Bengals 11 years ago. "It used to be it was totally desirous to have high picks, the more the better," Brown says. "I'm not sure that's so anymore.... There are teams that feel to heck with the draft picks. They are overpriced, they count too much against the cap and we'd rather allocate our cap in different ways."
