In the NBA, what's here today could be gone tomorrow--or even right after tonight's game. And that's not always a bad thing. After all, if pro basketball's landscape wasn't so prone to change, we still might be watching The Finals on tape delay, rooting for our team to pull out the deciding third game of its opening-round playoff series, or arguing over whether the Capital Bullets had a better draft than the Buffalo Braves and the Kansas City-Omaha Kings.

Change does have its drawbacks, though. Admit it, you miss the days of 135-134 shootouts, a flurry of deals at the trading deadline and low-level draft picks going on to become stars. Inimitable public address ...
