Juan Dixon shot lasers from long range; Lonny Baxter slogged through the muddle inside. Dixon needed to get free for his quick darts to the basket; Baxter set up barricade screens that created a roadway.
Such is the symbiotic relationship between Baxter and Dixon, Maryland's only fourth-year seniors and the undisputed leaders on a veteran Terrapins team.
Baxter, a 6-8, 260-pound center, powered his way to 29 points and nine rebounds, and Dixon, a 6-3, 164-pound shooting guard, slithered open for 27 points in leading Maryland past Connecticut, 90-82, in the East Regional final.
Baxter was named the East Region's Most Outstanding Player, but in the postgame celebration it was Dixon who climbed the ladder and made the final snips, winding up with a net draped around his neck.
"Just one of those things," Baxter said with a shrug. "We cut the net down, and he ended up with it."
At that point, Dixon took the net off and put it on Baxter.
Seemed only fair.
