The plot of "Panic Room" could not be more simple. It is as simple as waking up in the dark and wondering whether you really heard a noise or whether it fell through a crack in your dreams. Meg Altman (Jodie Foster), newly divorced, moves into a New York brownstone with her daughter, Sarah (Kristen Stewart). Before going to bed on their first night in the house, Meg grapples with the alarm system and gives up. A while later, three men break in from the rain. They are Burnham (Forest Whitaker), Raoul (Dwight Yoakam), and Junior (Jared Leto), and they were not expecting to find anyone there. Meg and Sarah do not interest them; what interests them is a sum of money left there by the previous owner. It lies beneath the floor of a special stronghold built within a wall and concealed behind a mirror: a place with its own food, lighting, toilet, surveillance system, and hard steel skin. Nobody has yet connected the phone. It is here that Meg and Sarah hole up once they realize that danger is upon them; they will not leave their tiny fortress, and the men will not leave until they can get in there and take what they want. The name of this place is the panic room.
