DAVID CAMPBELL was first and foremost a lyric poet. Over and over again, the poems he composed during the forty-three years of his working life as a writer bear witness to the way in which certain moments of experience can be etched so deeply in one's consciousness that they are felt to be timeless or eternally present. "Winter Stock Route", one of his earliest poems, puts this point exactly:

 
   The drover and his dray 
   Have gone; and on this hill 
   I find myself alone 
   And Time standing still. 

This sense of enchantment, of utter absorption in a moment, is fundamental to the lyric and lies at the heart of what it has to offer.
