However, Sydney, the acme of Australia's contribution to the maintenance and advance of civilisation, yet again flaunted its indifference to peril, and perhaps to civilisation, by welcoming the new year with another burst of bushfires, its second major conflagration in eight years. More recklessly than any other city I know, or have even heard of, Sydney absorbs systemic doses of nature in quantities that pose grave risk to its health.
