SEOUL, April 1 Asia Pulse - The number of international flights is expected to jump ahead of the opening of the 2002 FIFA World Cup finals, the Ministry of Construction and Transportation said Friday.
Korean Air, Asiana Airlines and 45 foreign carriers will expand weekly service to the peninsula to 1,368 flights from March 31-October 26 and put a maximum 202 airplanes along the routes.
The steep upswing is largely due to the recovery in aviation demand which slowed after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the United States, the 2002 World Cup games and an expected increase in passengers during the summer holiday season.
Weekly flights are scheduled to increase to 1,324 in June and 1,368 flights in August from the present 1,166.
The air carriers will operate 150 additional flights weekly during the World Cup, including 91 to China and 21 to Japan.
By region, they will operate 41 weekly flights to China, 30 to Japan, 23 to Southeast Asia and 15 each to Europe and the United States.
