TOKYO, April 1 Asia Pulse - Thirty-five per cent of new landing slots at the New Tokyo International Airport in Narita have been awarded to airlines from Asian countries, 36 per cent to domestic airlines, 21 per cent to U.S. carriers and 4 per cent to European airlines, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced Friday.
The new landing slots are the result of a recently completed second runway that will begin operating April 18. The runway is expected to accommodate 594 landings/takeoffs per week.
Asian carriers have rights to a high share of new openings due to rising demand for passenger and cargo flights. Slots were awarded to three Chinese airlines that will fly in and out of Narita airport for the first time, in addition to airlines from Mongolia and New Guinea.
