ITEM: Consumer Reports is calling for more federal regulation of fuel economy. Jim Guest, president of CR, writes in the March issue that using oil from Alaska is not the answer. "A much more practical move is to urge consumers to drive more-economical vehicles and to require manufacturers to produce vehicles with better fuel efficiency," he says, by strengthening the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards, especially for sport-utility vehicles and vans. "Allowing light trucks to meet less stringent requirements no longer makes sense."
CORRECTION: In 1974, the government also claimed a mandatory CAFE increase would lessen dependence on foreign oil and reduce total emissions. It did neither. Dependence almost doubled (to nearly 60 percent), and fuel use increased.
