The Hits: Many of these SACD releases are so good that they might have been selected for this year's Staff Picks had space permitted (I'll place an asterisk after the album title for those I thought about putting in the staff picks article). Suffice it to say that the recordings here that are reissues show a decided improvement in the sound compared to their CD counterparts -- whether they had been recently remastered in PCM or not. A few of the classical recordings are not reissues.
Santana: Abraxas, Sony CS65490 - single layer stereo. The analog to digital transfer here is the best I've ever heard. This recording demonstrates well the hallmarks of DSD sound: larger, more open sound stage, greater inner detail and smoother high frequencies than even the best PCM is capable of. Those who are intimately familiar with this album will be astounded by how much it surpasses earlier digital releases.
Miles Davis: Kind of Blue, Sony CS 64935 - single layer stereo. This one is now available in a multi-channel release. I am disappointed in this one's transfer to DSD, but only slightly. Given what Sony has demonstrated, this one shows only moderate improvement over the sound of their remastered PCM version from 1996, but it follows suit with Sony's other analog-to-DSD conversions when comparing them to their PCM predecessors, just not as dramatically.
Miles Davis: Sketches of Spain, Sony CS65142 - single layer stereo*. I know it's trite to say that when listening to music on an audio system one feels as if he's there with the musicians, but I have to say it. There are a few moments here when I could swear Miles is playing his trumpet in my living room. A friend has a mint first pressing of this recording on vinyl, but I'll swear again and tell you here that it does not convince me that it's not a recording.
Thelonious Monk: Straight, No Chaser Sony CS 64886 -- single layer stereo. I'm not as enamored with Monk's later recordings for Columbia as I am with those he did in the 50's for Prestige and Riverside, so I guess I was biased against this one from the start. Still, it shares much in common with the Kind Of Blue DSD transfer, and those who enjoy this commercial album will find it much improved over the standard CD.
