Whether or not you're a child of the '60s or California born or bred, the ineluctable allure of The Mamas and The Papas is difficult to ignore. John Phillips recruited tenor Denny Doherty and contralto Cass Elliot to augment himself and his wife, Michelle, in a vocal extravaganza that honored Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross, paid homage to rivals Beachboys and Beatles, and anticipated the Eagles, Manhattan Transfer, and Crosby, Stills, and Nash. From their first album, If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears, to their swan song, The Papas and The Mamas, Phillips's exacting vocal arrangements bloomed within this tendentious, star-crossed quartet. Their brief and brilliant recording career has become imprinted on our collective consciousness as surely as any thing or event arising out of the '60s.
Their recorded legacy has been variably easy and difficult to obtain. Over the years, I've managed to secure on CD the two above albums plus their third, The Mamas and The Papas Deliver.
