FREE FALLING: The Galileo Probe was designed for a unique, one-way mission: It would plunge into Jupiter's atmosphere at 106,000 miles per hour and transmit data about the gas giant's chemical makeup while dropping to its death. To ensure that the craft would keep from tumbling wildly during its descent and that its particle analyzer could accurately interpret how laser light would be scattered by the gases rushing past, NASA researchers created a simulation of how Jovian air would flow around the craft.
