The roots of rap, which became a recognizable pop music subgenre in the United States around 1980, actually lie in Jamaica, where "chatting" or "toasting" over an instrumental backdrop was a popular practice in Kingston's open-air "sound system" dances. Those who performed in this manner were called DJs (as opposed to selectors, who actually spun the discs), and DJ culture remains an important aspect of the reggae scene.
