The music of Arvo Part can be somewhat polarizing; recordings of his works sell well, but the critical commentary is less predictable. While many find the emotional intensity and spirituality of his compositions inspiring and uplifting, others react with less enthusiasm to the relatively static harmonic movement and lack of thematic development that typify his work. His significance as a late-twentieth-century choral composer, however, is undeniable. This is only the second recording of Part's setting of the Passion According to St. John; the first, by the Hilliard Ensemble (Passio [ECM 837 109-2, 1994]), is still in print ...
