Although he is primarily known for the incredibly popular operettas he composed in collaboration with librettist W. S. Gilbert, Arthur Sullivan's professional career was bracketed by periods of serious choral and orchestral composition. The cantata The Golden Legend (based on a drastic abridgment of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem) was written late in that career and met with great popularity when first presented.
