Shortly before the opening of the UN's "war crimes" trial of Slobodan Milosevic, the Croatian magazine Globus published transcripts of phone conversations between the former Serbian dictator and former President Bill Clinton. According to Croatia's defense ministry, the transcribed phone calls were among thousands intercepted by the country's military intelligence service.
"In parts, the [transcripts] read like an afternoon TV soap opera, with the dry wit, fatherly wisdom, and weary political woes of the Serbian strongman in the leading role," noted a wire service summary. The conversations were remarkably collegial, despite the Clinton administration publicly depicting Milosevic as the "Butcher of the Balkans" and the Belgrade regime's reciprocal disdain for the Clinton administration.
