This is what happens. A young woman wearing a white lab coat is sitting in a cafeteria, keeping her thoughts to herself, when a man carrying a tray sits down across from her. Striking up a conversation, he tells the woman -- her name is Joyce -- that he recognizes her from years before; they grew up in the same small Canadian town.
