On Friday, 8 March, the United Nations will observe International Women's Day with a televised event highlighting the status of women and girls in Afghanistan entitled "Afghan Women Today: Realities and Opportunities". The event will feature addresses by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan, and Laura Bush, the First Lady of the United States. The President of the General Assembly, Han Seung-soo, and the President of the Security Council, Ole Peter Kolby, will also address the opening ceremony.
