North Dakotans who favor changing the state's name tend to be realists. They readily concede that many evocative and desirable alternatives (Florida, Tahiti, Martinique) are unavailable, while certain other options (Southern Manitoba, Lower Saskatchewan) are not advisable. The name-change advocates make no attempt to be boldly original; they want to call their home Dakota, period -- minus the directional modifier that was appended in 1889, when Dakota Territory (adapted from the name of the Dakota tribe, which means "alliance of friends") was divided, and North Dakota and South Dakota simultaneously joined the Union.
