PORT CHARLOTTE -- Liberty Elementary School Principal Tom Gifford didn't say why Joann Winkler was chosen as Charlotte County Schools Teacher of the Year for 2003. Neither did the five School Board members.
Why bother? Winkler's class of fourth-grade students was much better equipped.
One student praised Winkler because she "helps me with all the hard stuff I can't do." Another put it into even simpler terms, saying Winkler deserved the award because she is "really awesome."
