A 12-year-old boy was shot dead in central Johannesburg in the early hours of New Year's Day, but the Hillbrow area of the city was quieter than usual, police said on Tuesday morning. Police spokesman Superintendent Lungelo Dlamini said in a media statement that the boy was out lighting crackers on the corner of De Villiers and King George Streets after midnight to celebrate the New Year. He then suddenly ran into the flat where he lived, and collapsed in the kitchen, with a bullet wound in his side. A 32-year-old man is being questioned about the death, and his licensed firearm has been confiscated.
