Paul Klee was born in Switzerland in 1879 and after visiting Italy and Paris, he settled in 1906 in Munich (where he had studied earlier). His early output was devoted to printmaking, and ten of his etchings were included in the 1906 Munich Secession exhibition. Beginning in 1911 he was associated with the Blaue Reiter group, and from 1924 he exhibited with Wassily Kandinsky, Alexej von Jawlensky, and Lyonel Feininger as the Blue Four: A visit to Tunisia in 1914 caused him to introduce color into his hitherto black-and-white work.

Klee taught at the Bauhaus from 1920 until 1931 and left Germany for Switzerland in 1933. Seventeen of his works were included in the 1937 ...
