Republican Michael Bloomberg, recently sworn in as mayor of New York City, has promised "to make abortion a standard part of OB-GYN instruction in the city's hospitals," reported the January 9th Village Voice. If this promise is carried out, "the result will be groundbreaking. No other city is known to have institutionalized abortion training in its public hospitals."
Lois Backus of the abortion training group "Medical Students for Choice" applauds Bloomberg's promise as "extremely brave." "No other publicly funded system has had the courage to say, 'We're going to spend our tax dollars pursuing this priority,' to my knowledge," she commented. Of course, such pro-abortion "courage" would be underwritten with tax money extracted from New York residents who have strong moral objections to abortion. So much for "freedom of choice."
In a meeting with activists from the National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League (NARAL) last June, Bloomberg was asked to endorse taxpayer-subsidized abortion training -- which he did without question. "He took [the training proposal] word-for-word directly from our materials," stated NARAL-NY executive director Kelli Conlin.
