While growing up in a small town in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, I became very friendly with an extraordinary Hungarian couple. The time I spent in their home was a source of deep cultural enrichment with hours of exposure to literature, fine art and music. On special evenings, after minimal coaxing, Olga would sit at the keyboard and play her "Hungarian music" with a style and flair I have never been able to imitate.
With this background, I accepted without hesitation the invitation to review In Vino Veritas (In Wine There Is Truth), a collection of Hungarian revelling songs published by Edito Musica Budapest. It is a collection of forty songs, by an almost equal number of composers, mostly one or two pages in length. All the songs are folk-like in character, arranged for voice and piano with an optional violin part printed separately.
