I am writing these few paragraphs to demonstrate my support for the FOUNDATION's many commendable endeavors and the concept of FOUNDATION Fellow recognition.
Complete and total surprise! That was my reaction at being named a FOUNDATION Fellow last March at the 2001 MTNA National Convention in Washington, D.C. My last-minute rush from the airport to the banquet certainly added to the drama. There were jokes and smiles from people at my table. "You finally decided to show up?" The waitress graciously served my food even though everyone else was finished.
Wolfing down dinner, I wasn't paying full attention to the announcements. Halfway through dessert my name was called, and I honestly thought a mistake had been made--perhaps I was "hearing things." But the fact was that former students had made a decision to honor me by making contributions to the FOUNDATION Fellow program. I was so proud to be on that stage! Not proud of my few accomplishments, but of the support of such fantastic teacher-musicians who remain devoted to their students and to MTNA, and who continue to enrich the lives of young people on a daily basis.
This experience affected me profoundly. My response has been to establish a new MTNA FOUNDATION endowment. Dr. Gary L. Ingle, Jennifer Martin and others helped get the paperwork in place. Our "Endowment for ...
