In essence, Colts owner Jim Irsay said, I don't care the cost, hire Tony Dungy. Imagine, amid this knee-jerk frenzy of coaching changes, an NFL owner exercising some common sense.

This is a move that should be creating all kinds of concern among AFC teams, if not throughout the league. You need look only as far as the Rams to understand the impact a great defensive mind can have on a team that already is formidable offensively.

What Lovie Smith did for St. Louis, Smith's mentor will do for the Colts. Dungy will prod team president Bill Polian to bring in better players, and then he will teach those players the wonders of the Tampa Bay defense and its cover 2 principles. And just that quickly, the Colts will be a major Super Bowl contender next year after a 2001 season in which they underachieved and played passively on defense. Dungy's presence means that much.

This endorsement, however, comes with an asterisk. Dungy must not meddle much in the world of the Colts' offense, which has much more talent and explosiveness than anything he ...
