The signs from the football gods are everywhere. They keep pointing to the Patriots, this inexplicable group of opportunistic players who have ridden a gifted coach, a little bit of luck and a huge portion of grit to within one victory of the NFL championship.
They win one playoff game in a snowstorm on the whim of an instant-replay reversal, They win the AFC conference championship on the roll of two special teams touchdowns and the accuracy of a veteran quarterback who last played in September. Their team statistics are average, and when opponents look at them on tape, they seem so, so vulnerable.
