Walls can take on a magnetic personality when coated with paints that contain iron filings. Two or three applications and the surface becomes fair game for magnets and anything you want to stick up without making holes: drawings, lists, photos, reminders.

We tested Liquid Magic Wall and Magnetic Creations, which are light-gray primers, and MagnaMagic, an additive that mixes with latex or oil-based paint. We applied each with a roller to smooth wallboard, comparing the effectiveness of one, two, and three base coats. Between coats we let surfaces dry, and we always ended with a topcoat of high-quality latex paint.

One coat holds the lightest, most flexible magnets, we found. Two coats hold better, and three better yet. Magnetic Creations held a slight edge over the others, but even three coats did not reach the holding power of a refrigerator or metal filing cabinet.
