More capability for less. Many standard, single-disc DVD players now cost less than $200. Spend $200 to $250, and you can buy models that hold as many as five discs. Some in that price range also offer progressive-scan circuitry, which can produce a smoother, more realistic image when used with an HD-capable TV.
Models that record. Several manufacturers now offer models that play and record. We've seen prices that currently begin at about $1,000. Another drawback is that these units use several noncompatible formats. Models with web browsers and other interactive features are also in the works.
