When the Deer Creek catalog informed us that the Good Luck Money Ring "draws money to you like a magnet," we knew we had to try it. Did the ring possess "the mystic power to make money come to you--big money!"? We paid $25, including postage, for two rings and chose our lucky seven volunteers to wear them--six women and one man secure enough in his masculinity to wear a ring that is, frankly, kind of girlie-girl. Volunteers wore the ring for a day or more. (The catalog said, "Use it when you want lots of money fast!")

The only day in the week on which Tod didn't find a penny was--you guessed it--the day he wore the Good Luck Money Ring. "Nothing. Zero. Zip. Zilch," he reported. Sarah, on the other hand, found a penny left on a table.

Kim "ran into no money, not even a penny in a parking lot." But things got interesting when she gave the bauble to her kids and to their piano teacher. He also sells organs and had placed a $75,000 model in a church for a trial run. On the day he wore the ring, the church said it couldn't afford the organ. He's now out $2,000 in moving and installation costs. Kim's 12-year-old son found four lost birthday checks on his messy desk, but he was cleaning his room.
