Macromedia Director Shockwave Studio is a well-established authoring tool for Web, CD-ROM, and DVD-ROM content. Of late, Macromedia has been pursuing Web 3D content creation with a vengeance, basing Director's 3D authoring and importing capabilities on Intel's Internet 3D Graphics Software technology. According to senior product manager Miriam Geller, approximately 300,000 users a day are downloading the now 3D-enabled player. "This is putting the cart before the horse a bit," notes Geller. "People aren't downloading it to view 3D content, necessarily." But Macromedia has decided to take a stand in the "What comes first, the content or the capability?" question regarding 3D on the Web. And Geller is encouraged by the rate at which 3D applications vendors (Alias/Wavefront, for example) have committed to providing exporters from their applications to the Director 3D file formatW3D.
