Henry Francis du Pont's (see p. 154, Pl. I) interests in both horticulture and colorful furnishing textiles are combined in Winterthur's collection of Indian hand-painted cottons (see frontispiece and Pls. I, LID. Never before considered as a group, Winterthur's collection comprises twenty-four examples, most of which are quilts and bedcovers. Du Pont was undoubtedly drawn to tile clear colors and exotic floral patterns of the hand-painted cottons made on the Coromandel Coast of India for the, European market.
