My gut tells me that Andre Dawson and Alan Trammell are not Hall of Famers. They were stellar players and outstanding baseball citizens, but that isn't enough. The way I see it, the Hall should be reserved for only the best.
If I were merely a fan, the debate would end there. But as a Hall of Fame voter, I carry a special responsibility--the responsibility to assess Hall of Fame candidates as best as I can.
On this year's ballot, there is only one no-questions-asked, first-time candidate--Ozzie Smith. Ignore Smith's .262 lifetime batting average. He was the greatest defensive shortstop of his era, and maybe of all time.
