If Wednesday is hump day in the working world, January is hump month in the NBA--the month when most teams get a definitive answer as to where their season is headed.

Aside from some weeping Wizards fans, here are three things to look for in the first month of 2002.

The West might be won. Few doubt the Lakers will win it all again this year, but the Spurs like to keep it interesting during the regular season. The two teams haven't met yet but will face each other twice in seven days--in San Antonio on January 19 and in Los Angeles on January 25. If either team sweeps, the two-game set could go a long way toward determining the top seed in the Western Conference because losses come about only once every other week for these teams.
