LOOKING BETTER: The play of WR D'Wayne Bates against the Lions Sunday was a needed boost to an offense getting ready for the playoffs. Bates, a third-round pick in 1999, has disappointed the team with a lack of intensity and an inability to beat jams at the line of scrimmage. He had four catches for 107 yards and a touchdown while working primarily as the No. 3 receiver Sunday. He could get a more expanded role in the postseason because he can exploit the deep middle and get penetration in the secondary.
