One week from now, fans of most NFL teams will have packed up their hibachis and coolers, put away their flags and face paint and started spending more Sunday afternoons working in and around the house.
But before they get discouraged by a playoff season without their favorite team, they should remember that just one year ago, the Bears and Patriots each finished 5-11. Today, both teams are headed to the playoffs. Here are four teams that could do a similar about-face next year.
Chiefs. After a slow start under new coach Dick Vermeil, they had a strong finish, which could be an indication of things to come. The emergence of running back Priest Holmes and the improved play of the defense are rays of hope.
During the offseason, the team needs to fortify its offensive line, and quarterback Trent Green must spend time adjusting to his receivers. By next fall, the passing game will have better timing and overall consistency, and with a few more tools in its shed, Kansas City could be back in the playoffs.
Browns. They need to upgrade their offensive line and acquire a premier running back through the draft or by signing a free agent. And they must find a better fit than Percy Ellsworth or Devin Bush at free safety.
Is that a lot to accomplish in one offseason? Yes. Can Dwight Clark and Carmen Policy get it done for coach Butch Davis?
Absolutely.
