Overall score is based on cooktop speed and simmer performance, plus oven capacity and baking, broiling, and self-cleaning performance. Speed reflects how fast the most powerful burner could heat up about 6 quarts of room-temperature water to a near boil. The swiftest did the job in about 12 minutes; the slowest took about 19 minutes. We gauge simmer performance on the ability of the lowest-powered burner to melt and hold chocolate without scorching it and on the ability of the highest-powered burner (when set to low) to hold tomato sauce below a boil.
