This year, you may react to any flulike symptoms with more than the usual concern. It's not easy to distinguish influenza from deadlier diseases such as anthrax and from milder afflictions like the common cold. Many symptoms overlap.

The chart below can help you determine when to see your doctor or seek emergency treatment, and when to just ride the illness out. It's particularly important to see your physician promptly if you develop a sudden fever and cough. That combination is the most reliable indicator that you have the flu rather than a cold.
