No grocery aisle is more confusing than the milk aisle, even if you know all about the myriad kinds of cow's milk. Now, soy milk shares the shelf space.
You may have thought about drinking soy milk, made from a protein-rich legume that can help lower cholesterol. Soy also contains estrogenlike chemicals that may help reduce some symptoms of menopause and the risk of osteoporosis.
Which brand tastes best? We asked four taste testers to evaluate seven brands of vanilla-flavored soy milk. Results ranged widely, although the refrigerated drinks generally did better than the shelf-stable drinks.
Very good: Vitasoy Vanilla Delite and Silk Vanilla. Both had a mild vanilla flavor, were mildly sweet, and require refrigeration. They were tasty straight up and could also be used on cereals or other foods to which you'd otherwise add regular milk. (Soy milk can also replace cow's milk in virtually any recipe.)
Good: Soy Dream Vanilla Enriched and Sun Soy Vanilla. Soy Dream tasted slightly malty but is still a good introduction to soy milk. Sun Soy tasted "beanier" than the higher-rated drinks. Soy Dream is shelf stable; Sun ...
