The Camry, especially in the XLE trim, exudes the quality and refinement of a luxury car. The well-rounded package includes a polished powertrain; smooth, quiet ride; capable handling and braking; and generous accommodations.
THE DRIVING EXPERIENCE
The Camry rides serenely, smoothing out road bumps with ease. The engine is nearly silent, and road and wind noise are well muted.
The XLE handled better and had better tire grip than the four-cylinder LE we tested last month, primarily because of different, wider tires. It handled a little more crisply than earlier Camrys, although it's not sporty. The steering is precise and fairly quick but light. The car proved predictable and stable at its limits. Stability control helped keep the car on course when pressed hard. The Camry negotiated our double-lane-change avoidance maneuver quite well.
The 192-hp, 3.0-liter V6 is smooth, powerful, and responsive. Expect 20 mpg in mixed driving on regular fuel, a 4-mpg penalty compared with the Four. The four-speed automatic is responsive and silky. A five-speed manual is offered only with Fours. Braking performance was excellent overall.
INSIDE THE CABIN
The luxurious interior is flawlessly finished. The driving position allows anyone a fine view out. The driver's seat, with multiple power adjustments and manual lumbar control, was comfortable overall, but some of our taller drivers wanted more thigh support and thought the pedals were too close together. The comfortable rear bench was the best in this group.
