In mid-November, the Federal Trade Commission sent about 40 e-mails to web-site operators demanding that they take down information claiming that nostrums such as oregano oil can prevent or treat anthrax and other bioterrors. The FTC said that it found more than 200 sites marketing bioterrorism products in a coordinated search with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and some states.
For anthrax alone, we've seen an assortment of masks, containers, and remedies that bear no resemblance to antibiotics. A promotion for the book "The Healing Miracles of Coconut Oil," by Bruce Fife, said, "I don't fear anthrax." He continued, "I have a weapon that protects me from harm if by chance I do encounter the beast. It's coconut, and more specifically coconut oil." Since the book was originally published in 2000 (and revised in July 2001), one might conclude the anthrax angle was an afterthought.
The mayor of Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla., northwest of Orlando, endorsed colloidal silver's ability to offset the impact of an anthrax attack and said that a colloidal-silver generator could be bought for about $100.Colloidal silver, he told the town council, "cannot harm." That's news to the FDA. It says that colloidal silver, a jellylike substance, can turn skin permanently blue-gray.
