- The price of Shell gas sold to domestic and industrial consumers would be reduced to the price currently offered by Sri Lankan-owned LAUGFS Gas, which is Rs 100 (US US$1.1) less per cylinder than the Dutch multinational, Commerce Minister Ravi Karunanayake said. The new price would be in force from January 2.
- The Colombo Stock Exchange, Sri Lanka's only bourse, in 2001 recorded its highest annual growth in seven years influenced largely by the mini rally in October when polls were announced. The benchmark All Share Price Index rose by 38.7 per cent while the Milanka Price Index gained by 47.6 per cent last year, making the bourse one of the best performing equity markets in the world
